The Pant Sloper

Welcome back!  This is the fourth part of my Sloper tutorial which focuses on the Pant Sloper.  It is a unique way of showing you how to draft the Pant Sloper quickly and easily.  As you know, a sloper, which is also called a block, is created with your own measurements or the measurements of your client. It does not have any seam allowances or design.  This basic Pant Sloper is quick and easy to draft and you will be able to create a perfectly fitting pattern for any design. All you need is a few measurements and your tools.

Measurements

You are going to need to take accurate measurements. Stand in front of a mirror or have a friend assist you if needed.  You will need the following measurements:

  • Waist
  • Hips
  • Waist to Hip
  • Waist to Floor
  • Pants Bottom Width
  • Body Rise – This measurement is taken by sitting in a flat chair with your knees together and your back straight.  Locate the center of your back at your waistline.  Use a tape measure to measure from your waist to the chair.  Do not sit on a soft chair or you will not get an accurate measurement.

The Tools You Will Need

  • Hip Ruler – I use several different types of Hip Rulers so that I can get the perfect curve
  • Yard Stick
  • L-Square Ruler
  • Tape Measure
  • Pattern Weights
  • Markers
  • Paper Scissors

Prepare Your Pattern Paper

Cut your pattern paper to a size that is workable. I usually measure my paper to be about 22″ wide which is more than enough. The length is 48″. Lay the paper horizontally across your table so that you are starting from the left, which will be your waist, and working towards your right which will be your Pant bottom. Use your pattern weights to flatten and hold your paper down while you work. Sometimes, I use a warm iron to flatten my paper down
